A Madeira Gem
Fabulous! It had everything. Pools, gym, several bars, excellent dining and wonderful staff. The room we had overlooked the pool and out to sea. Magical, especially watching the sunrise. The room was spacious, with coffee making facilities, nice linen and a bar fridge. Plenty of cupboard space. Very quiet too. Bus at the door, shops and restaurants nearby. Would definitely stay again.

Time of our life
Once again a beautiful and wonderful stay at Pestana Carlton. The staff we meet every year, and for 12 consecutive years, have always been kind, smiling, helpful, and makes you feel welcomed as soon as you enter the hotel entrance. Each day has been enjoyable, and the new idea with moving the bar on 5 floor to the terrace, has certainly been a success. It's easy to interact with the staff, and wonderful to enjoy the nice weather and the beautiful view. By morning buffet and the evening buffet there are wide variations to choose from. Location absolutely the best, and only 10 minutes walk to Funchal. center. You feel home when you come to Pestana Carlton. Will of course return.

Loving our Stay.
Currently in Pestana Carlton and having a great time. Were here about 15 years ago and have seen massive changes both in the Hotel and Funchal itself all for the better. We requested a room with a walk in shower due to my wifes difficulty with her knee. We were afforded that opportunity with a room on the second floor. It is a family room room with plenty of Space and beside the pool. No problem whatsoever with Sunbeds as they are plentiful. Breakfast in the morning well organised and plenty of choices. Numerous restaurants close by so no real need to go into Funchal to eat although a visit into town is a must. Staff extremely friendly particularly in the Snack Bar and Reception. Cant do enough for you. My only criticism of the Hotel is that when you ask for a bill after eating or having a few scoops in the evening it comes with a suggested service of 10%. Not sure that is a good idea and sharp practice in my opinion. I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending the Pestana Carlton and am looking forward to returning again next year.
Wonderful hotel
We have stayed at this hotel many, many times and we love it. Our son and daughter in law came out and joined us for a few days and they were very impressed with the hotel. They have never visited Madeira before and they think it’s an amazing island. I would agree with the other earlier reviews: the hotel is excellent in every way. The friendly staff cannot do enough to help, the breakfast is amazing, there are always sun beds available, and four pools!!! The hotel has recently been refurbished and they’ve done a wonderful job. It has a lovely fresh feeling with new carpets and furniture. There are so many areas inside and outside the hotel to read a book or just chill out and relax. We will definitely be back!

A five star hotel, we loved it………
This is a vast hotel. We booked through EasyJet Holidays.
Check in process was good. Staff very friendly and informative. Grand reception area.
Our room was on the 18th floor with amazing sea views. We had lots of space, a furnished balcony, king size bed, over bath shower, safe, fridge, hairdryer and coffee making facilities. The room was traditionally furnished and very comfortable. Hotel directory/ info can be accessed via qr code. Pool towels are available in the room and replaced along with other towels daily by housekeeping staff.
Breakfast was great. So much choice, delicious food and champagne available daily. Lots of seating both inside and on the balcony. Buffet style open 7am - 11am. We also ate in The Pub at the hotel (see separate review) and the pool bar. All the food we had was very good.
We paid separately to see the ABBA show at the hotel which was very good. This included a three course meal which was delicious plus unlimited beer, wine or soft drinks.
The pool area is lovely with very easy access in to the water. We didn’t have any trouble getting sun beds. The pools are seawater which was not an issue for us. Other pools are available plus direct access in to the sea from a small pier.
The hotel is approx 20 min walk to Funchal town centre. We walked in as all downhill and caught the local bus back for just over 2 € each. You can pay on the bus. The Lido tourist area is left when you come out of the hotel approx 15 min walk past the famous Reid’s Hotel.
We found the hotel to be very clean and peacefully quiet. On the pool level there is a shop, a hairdresser, a library and a place where you can book excursions.
We ate out most lunch times and in the evening. Please see my profile/ other reviews for restaurant recommendations. I strongly advise that you download The Fork App for restaurant bookings and discounts!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Pestana Carlton and Madeira generally.
Very highly recommended.
