LUX Grand Gaube

TripAdvisor Review
Mauritius, Indian Ocean
Grand Gaube

This is what a holiday beach hotel should look like – the soft sand, the endless blue horizons and the wonderful tranquillity. The Lux Grand Gaube Hotel in Mauritius is the perfect island get-away. It's beautifully designed; you'll spot the local influences at once– the thatched roofs, the harmony with nature and the relaxing, laidback atmosphere. But there's inspiration from the Far East too – with influences from feng shui helping to make the Lux Grand Gaube Hotel one of the most relaxing places to stay in Mauritius.

Tranquillity and relaxation amid stunning surroundings at the Lux Grand Gaube Hotel:

Occupying a stunning location near the lovely fishing village of Grand Gaube on the north coast, the Lux Grand Gaube Hotel gives you everything you'd expect of the finest beach hotel. The wonders of Mauritius are all around you – the beach, the miles of unspoilt forests, and the breathtaking views at every turn. But there's more to Mauritius – this is a vibrant, welcoming island, full of colour and music, and it's all waiting for you to discover it.

So the Lux Grand Gaube Hotel is the best place to start. There really aren't any more spectacular settings. The hotel is bordered by no fewer than three beaches – and a beautiful big lagoon. Views extend out over the northern isles of Mauritius and there's something spectacular to see from almost every vantage point.

From your room you can look out over the sea or the magnificent countryside and just soak it all up. Sit out on your furnished balcony or terrace and watch the waves crash gently against the shore, or listen to the gentle breeze rustling through the trees. These are the sights and sounds you'll never want to forget. Superior rooms at Lux Grand Gaube Hotel are magnificent. They're all ensuite and air conditioned, and benefit from additional features including telephone, satellite TV, minibar, safe, tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryer and Wi-Fi internet access. Deluxe rooms and suites are also available at a supplement.

As well as all those beaches to explore, you'll have four swimming pools to choose from – and that tranquil lagoon. There is also an excellently equipped fitness centre and a relaxing spa. In fact you can play sports, or you can swim, or you can windsurf or do any number of things… Or you might just want to make every effort to relax like never before. This really is the place to do it.

To aid your relaxation and contentment, you won't have to look far for the perfect meal. The Lux Grand Gaube Hotel boasts an outstanding selection of restaurants. Again local and Far Eastern influences have a bearing on the cuisine, but there is such a wonderfully eclectic mix on offer, from the best local food to barbeques and lighter offerings.

It's no surprise the Lux Grand Gaube Hotel is one of the most romantic hotels in the world. This is a beautiful, serene and utterly beguiling place – a perfect synthesis of setting and ambience that will completely charm you.

Very disappointing stay — significant maintenance, service and safety issues

We stayed at LUX* Grand Gaube for 8 nights at the beginning of August in a Family Suite on an all-inclusive basis. Unfortunately, despite the beautiful location and some genuinely wonderful individual staff members, the overall experience was extremely disappointing. Based on this stay, we would choose to stay elsewhere if we returned to Mauritius.

From the beginning of our stay, there were multiple issues with our Family Suite. The coffee machine, telephone, safe and bar fridge in the living room were all not working. These issues were reported to the hotel early in our stay, yet it took approximately three days before everything was finally resolved.

The air conditioning in the main bedroom was another significant problem. It was simply not powerful enough to keep the room comfortable, particularly overnight. The system repeatedly went into an “eco” mode, and the room became uncomfortably warm during the night.

The toilet in the main bedroom also did not flush and required further complaints before it was repaired.

For a resort positioning itself as a luxury property, having so many basic facilities in a Family Suite not functioning properly was extremely disappointing.

I would strongly reconsider the all-inclusive option

Based on our experience, I would also strongly advise against choosing the all-inclusive package.

Service around the pool was particularly poor. Despite having call bells positioned around the pool, staff themselves admitted that these were not actually connected to anything and were therefore completely useless.

On most occasions, rather than being able to order a drink from our loungers, we had to get up and walk to the bar ourselves. Even when we did order drinks, the wait was often extremely long.

The drinks themselves were also disappointing, with the overall quality and service falling well short of what we would expect from a luxury all-inclusive resort.

There were also repeated problems with towels around both the pool and beach. On numerous days, towels simply weren’t readily available and finding them became a daily struggle. We were given various explanations for the shortage, and it appeared that other guests were experiencing the same problem.

Given the amount we paid for an all-inclusive stay, we certainly expected a much higher level of service.

Food poisoning and management response

We ate exclusively at the resort during our stay. Unfortunately, my wife became ill with what we believe was food poisoning after eating at one of the resort’s restaurants.

What disappointed us most was not simply that she became ill, but the response from management. Rather than properly acknowledging our concern and investigating it, the response was essentially that perhaps her individual stomach simply “didn’t agree” with the food.

Given that we had eaten exclusively at the resort, we expected considerably more concern and professionalism when reporting the incident. At the very least, we expected our complaint to be taken seriously and properly investigated.

Promises of special arrangements that were never delivered

Following the various problems we experienced during our stay, the hotel insisted on arranging a special occasion for us at one of the restaurants where we had a dinner reservation.

To be clear, we never asked for or expected any special treatment. We were perfectly happy simply to have our dinner and enjoy our holiday.

However, once the hotel had told us that something special would be arranged, we naturally expected them to follow through. Unfortunately, when we arrived at the restaurant, nothing had been organised.

This happened twice.

Ironically, we genuinely would have preferred that nothing special was arranged at all. The problem was not the lack of a special occasion — it was being told that something would be done and then arriving to find that nobody appeared to know anything about it.

After an already disappointing stay, this simply added to the impression that communication between management and the various departments was poor and that promises were being made without proper follow-through.

The incident that really concerned us — our 2.5-year-old daughter

The most concerning incident of our entire stay involved our 2.5-year-old daughter.

She accidentally locked herself inside the main bedroom. To be completely fair, this was not the hotel’s fault — accidents involving young children can happen anywhere.

The issue was what happened afterwards.

We immediately contacted the hotel and asked them to come and unlock the bedroom using a key. Despite this being a Family Suite, the hotel staff told us that they did not have a key that could open the bedroom door.

Our daughter was consequently trapped inside the bedroom for approximately 30 minutes while staff tried to work out how to gain access.

Ultimately, I had to use a ladder to reach the second-storey window and get my daughter out of the room through the window. Only after this did hotel staff break down the main bedroom door to gain access to the room.

Having a 2.5-year-old child locked alone in a bedroom for around 30 minutes was an extremely stressful and frightening experience. More importantly, the fact that the hotel did not have an immediately accessible key or appropriate means of accessing a bedroom in a Family Suite is extremely concerning.

Credit where it is due

I do want to make it very clear that not every member of staff contributed to our disappointing experience. In fact, there were several individuals who were genuinely excellent and who went out of their way to help us throughout our stay.

I would particularly like to recognise Ashkay, Steeven, Fredy, Reedoo, Madhvi, Viresh, Saurev and Thiery.

These staff members were friendly, helpful and attentive, and we could see that they genuinely cared about their guests. Whenever they were involved, they made a real effort to assist us and improve our experience.

I want to specifically acknowledge them because it would be unfair for our criticism of the hotel’s management and operational issues to reflect negatively on individual employees who were doing their best.

Overall

We chose LUX* Grand Gaube expecting a high-end luxury family resort and paid accordingly. Instead, during an 8-night stay, we experienced:

  • Multiple maintenance problems in our Family Suite, taking days to resolve
  • Weak and unreliable air conditioning in the main bedroom
  • A non-functioning main bedroom toilet
  • Very poor pool service and extremely long waits for drinks
  • Pool call bells that staff admitted were not connected to anything
  • Disappointing drinks despite being on an all-inclusive package
  • Repeated shortages of pool and beach towels
  • A disappointing response when my wife became ill after eating at the resort
  • Two occasions where the hotel promised special arrangements that simply hadn’t been organised
  • And, most seriously, an approximately 30-minute incident where our 2.5-year-old daughter was trapped inside our bedroom and the hotel had no key available to access it

The resort itself is beautiful and there are some genuinely fantastic members of staff. Ashkay, Steeven, Fredy, Reedoo, Madhvi, Viresh, Saurev and Thiery deserve particular recognition for their efforts.

Unfortunately, good individual employees cannot compensate for what we experienced as significant problems with the hotel’s maintenance, service, communication and management.

For us, this was not the luxury family holiday we expected from LUX* Grand Gaube.

Based on our experience, we would not return to this resort and would choose a different property if we visited Mauritius again.

True definition of 5 Star

From the moment we arrived, utter luxury was experienced. A very welcoming NEHA assisted us with check in and orientation of the resort. The facilities were immaculate and the service was beyond professional. The duo of CHEF DEEPUCK & CHEF SAURAV were the main highlights who accommodated our dietary requirements beyond measure. The food was absolutely fantastic and honestly the largest spread of veg and vegan options we've seen thus far in our travels. KEVIN was polite, graceful and worked hard and well in ensuring anything we needed was catered for in the communal areas. Honestly a wonderful resort with 5 star truly resonating throughout each and every aspect of it.

Blissful 2 week getaway 😎🫶 LUX Grande Gaube Mauritius

Where to start...quite simply a perfect holiday that will be hard to beat anywhere in the World! Our experience at the LUX Grande Gaube was wonderful from the moment we arrived until the very last minutes spent in resort. We can't wait to return and will consider ourselves very lucky to do so in the future. The resort itself, facilities, dining options were top notch with stunning views from our room/balcony overlooking the main beach/cove which we adored at Sunset. The customer service and attention to detail is spot on and ALL of the staff go out of their way to treat you with kindness. The dining options are wonderful at the Palm Court (excellent buffet available), while the A La Carte options at Cafe Rouge, Bodrum Blue, BB's and the Creole Smokehouse offer delicious food at lunch & dinner. If you wish to experience a further dining experience of the highest quality be sure not to miss out on INTI. Exquisite food by Chef Pedro, beverages by the excellent Mixologist and entertainment from the very talented guitarist who played an acoustic set during our meal! Kaviraj & Naresh were also so very attentive and kind! We cannot praise ALL of the staff enough, from front of house, housekeepers, groundstaff, people behind the scenes that make the resort what it is...thank you all. The ice cream van was WOW, coffees and frappe's from Cafe LUX were most welcome and delicious! We would personally like to thank several people who went above and beyond to make our holiday unique. Thank you to Varsha who looked after us in the Palm Court on a daily basis, aswell as at Cafe Rouge. Nund at Cafe Rouge treated us to some wonderful cocktails and greeted us with a lovely smile each and everytime we saw him. Ricardo at BB's and the Creole Smokehouse was extremely kind and attentive. Mahandra was also a firm favourite - he made us laugh at mealtimes and kept our glasses full whether we were at Palm Court, BB's or the Smokehouse (thank you ;o)). A huge thank you and shout out goes to the hard working/attentive beach waiting staff. The beach cooler boxes were amazing and the guy"s work tirelessly from sunrise until sunset. Thank you Kumar, Viresh & Reedoo for constantly looking out for us. Viresh has the kindest heart and works extremely hard - thank you for introducing us to friends and family at the Ganesh Festival celebrations and for looking after us! Last but not least thank you to the main man Reedoo who relentlessly took care of us. Nothing was too much trouble - we have wonderful photographs to cherish. Reedoo tirelessly looked after everyone from cleaning sunglasses, spritzing beachgoers with a spray (close your eyes and make a wish) to quite literally making dreams come true in paradise - ooh la la - thank you Reedoo 🫶 LUX Grande Gaube we hope to return someday soon but in the meantime keep creating special moments for your guests! Thank you one & all, Kirsty & Vanessa Clark-Field 🫶

Yet another exceptional holiday!

Our 6th time at this incredible hotel. From start to finish we experienced nothing but good service with a smile, beautiful surroundings and the most amazing food. We stayed in a wellness room which was nicely cleaned by Yusalin who always went the extra mile by leaving little friendly notes and flower displays. Always a lovely welcome when you came back later. The hotel grounds were always attentively looked after by the gardeners and everywhere was spotlessly clean. Also a big plus for us was that it was very accessible for a wheelchair user. One of the reasons we keep coming back is because of the staff, they are incredible and we think of them more as friends now. We were always greeted with a warm welcome to make sure there was nothing we needed. Particularly helpful was Joenathan who as usual made sure things ran smoothly for us and he was someone we could always rely on. We shall miss our regular chats. We loved all the restaurants as well as the buffet with its amazing range of food which we considered to be of a very high standard. We tried many different cocktails and were encouraged to try new ones by Kevin. We loved all the ones he made! Thank you also to Stephen who showed me how to make one of their delicious crème brûlées, I will definitely be making them at home. We would just like to give special thanks to…. Diren for being so kind and attentive. Canderels were always on the table, x Nitisha for organising many special treats including the jetty, breakfast, canapés ❤️ Durgesh, Purgan, Veer, Reedo, Liam, Amit, Keshan, Darren, Ihshan, Avi, Leena, Vinish Chetan for their wonderful service towards us. Amazing meal at the INTI restaurant, all the courses were outstanding, a great experience which we shall not forget. Thank you Pedro. Lastly our lovely Chef Tesigen Ramen and Deepuck who both brought us food which not only looked beautiful but tasted incredible. We really appreciated their love of making us feel so special as did all the above. Please forgive us for not mentioning everyone, you all contributed to making our holiday so wonderful. Nitish GM we shall be back next year and look forward to seeing you all again!

A great getaway

This was an idyllic getaway for my husband and I. The food was excellent, the live music catered to all tastes and the staff were more than courteous and welcoming. The rooms are beautiful, clean and inviting. The spa is lovely with knowledgeable staff. Our room did have an issue with the minibar and we did have to ask several times for ice due to this. This was our only hiccup in an otherwise idyllic stay.
