Paradis Beachcomber

I recently returned from what can only be described as paradise.

I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again: if you could put Mauritius into a resort, it would be Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa.

The setting is extraordinary. Le Morne Mountain, the clearest ocean, an expansive beach, an 18-hole championship golf course, wonderful restaurants, water sports, spas, entertainment and the neighbouring Dinarobin; the variety feels endless. You can stand on the golf course staring at Le Morne, trying not to get distracted, or swim out into water so clear you can still see the nail polish on your toes.

I’ve travelled to Mauritius for around 12 years, usually once a year and sometimes more, and I consider myself incredibly fortunate to know the island as I do.

But this stay was different.

I’m writing this review because I was deeply moved by the hospitality, heart, kindness and generosity of the people I encountered.

One of the greatest gifts of travel is perspective. And perhaps an even greater gift is getting to know the heart of the people behind the roles they play.

We can so easily walk into a resort, restaurant or shop feeling entitled to be served. But I’ve found that something extraordinary happens when you slow down, make eye contact and become genuinely curious about the person standing in front of you. The heart behind the role and responsibility.

Ask about their story. Their ambitions. What they love.

Your own life may change a little in the process.

Mine did.

There is something remarkable about Mauritian hospitality. It feels deeply rooted. Almost generational. Their kindness, generosity, pride in their work and they truly have a genuine desire to make another person’s experience beautiful.

I was equally struck by the ambition of so many people I met: working full-time while studying, pursuing further qualifications, developing their knowledge and growing in their career. And yet, there is no frantic rush. There is a presence and pace that stays with you.

There are so many people I could name, but I want to recognise a few who particularly touched our stay.

Rajesh, who taught us golf, was endlessly patient with two complete beginners! His practical lessons about posture, grip, eye movement and rhythm somehow became a lesson in life too: sometimes you have to stop trying so hard, let go and allow things to flow. Thank you for the golf lesson and the unexpected life lesson. You’re an icon and what an honour to learn from you! A gift in teaching!

Michael may be known as a barman at Paradis, but he is so much more. He is ambitious, kind, hilarious and incredibly connected. He remembers the details, creates experiences and genuinely cares. If you are exploring Paradis or the south of Mauritius, find Michael. He is your guy. More importantly, he is now a friend.

Roy at Zest embodies consistency and attentiveness. He remembers you, wants to find you the best seat, makes sure your coffee is right and genuinely wants to know how you are. His passion is felt.

Jean-Yves, the “walking encyclopaedia”, can hold a conversation about almost anything, from rugby to history to the completely random! But beyond his knowledge, his communication, humour and ability to make people feel engaged are remarkable. We also met his son, Fabian, before we even knew they were related. Fabian carries such a beautiful sense of responsibility and ambition, and I see a very bright future ahead for him. We’re grateful for the time he spent and care he shared with us.

Rajen, who looked after our room, reminded me that housekeeping is so much more than cleaning. We would return from breakfast to a room so beautifully restored that it felt like we were checking in again. His pride, kindness and care were a meaningful part of our stay. Thank you for making beauty felt.

At Dinarobin, Luciano introduced us to wine with such gentleness and intelligence, while Shannon at Blue Marlin, Paradis, brought an infectious curiosity despite her expertise. As South Africans, we love our wine, and these two opened our eyes to new regions and experiences without ever making it feel intimidating or rushed.

Rikesh (Dinarobin bar) was wonderful to reconnect with after watching his career grow over the years. His creativity and passion for cocktails are obvious and yes, his “detox” cocktail is worth trying!

MJ (Jerome) has been another person I’ve watched grow, and seeing the entertainment at Dinarobin come to life was a highlight. The local traditional dance performance was unforgettable. It was beautiful, energetic and deeply rooted in Mauritian culture.

Our spa experience was the perfect ending to the holiday. Lina and Hanshinee listened to what our bodies and minds needed rather than simply giving us a treatment menu, and created one of the best massages both my friend and I have experienced. We left feeling genuinely rested.

And Francesco, the new Italian chef at Zest, brought such passion to his food and to blending his Italian heritage with Mauritius. And apparently, you really should try the carbonara!

I also want to recognise the management team.

Yannick welcomed us with warmth and incredible attention to detail. Medgee brings extraordinary energy, organisation, passion and generosity to everything she does. She is a true warrior queen. Laura and Veronique impress me with their extraordinary organisation and calmness. They seem to be able to make almost anything happen while bringing order without stress.

Eddy, has earned my deepest respect. Having worked across so many departments, he leads with a wonderfully holistic perspective. You see it in how he engages with guests, invests in his team, recognises individual strengths and creates opportunities for people to grow. Thank you for making us feel seen, understood, valued and like family.

Stephan, carrying the weight of the two resorts and yet his attentive care and attention to detail was felt. Thank you, for the way you work in creating significance and moments of awe by leading in the detail.

I was moved to tears more times during this holiday than I can remember on any previous trip to Mauritius.

A beautiful location can take your breath away.

But people can move your heart.

The people at Paradis and Dinarobin did that for me.

They took what could have simply been a week and a half on a tropical island and turned it into something much more meaningful. I left feeling refreshed physically, inspired mentally, moved emotionally and, in many ways, renewed spiritually.

This isn’t the perfect write up and I am sure I’ve missed so much I want to say… but remember…

You work for a purpose. You impact people daily.

And we got to feel it.
