Wouldn’t go back. We had two rooms; kids room stunk, our room had ants and roaches and back door wouldn’t lock. Staff was super friendly but property needs major facelift. Not one restaurant was great food.

Anniversary Trip with Sea Turtle Death

Our experience was just okay at this resort. The hotel was much more outdated than I was expecting, especially based on their advertising and photos. The hallways showed hundreds of plaster repairs from leaks and the exterior of the entire building has different colored windows and glass panels, large structural cracks, and paint peeling everywhere. Rooms were clean though, there was overall great service, okay food and drinks, but a few major issues… so keep reading.

The seaweed made the ocean completely disgusting and most would say unusable. I almost cried when we looked out our hotel room window for the first time. I wanted an ocean view of turquoise water, but instead it was waves filled with brown seaweed with mountains of it washed up on the beaches. No one was removing it (honestly the problem is so bad I don’t think they can handle all of it) so the rotting smell gave off the aroma of sulfur. You didn’t want to open the sliding door or the room would smell like it. Not what I remembered Cancún beaches looking like, so I can only imagine how this hurts their tourism right now. It was super sad to see.

The entire hotel was only able to use their ONE SINGULAR “adult” POOL. The other one is for kids, So, it was equivalent to cloudy bathwater, packed with kids, but really our only option unless we wanted to swim with tons of scratchy, smelly seaweed. We went on a few excursions to get away from the issue, but this is definitely NOT the experience we paid thousands of dollars to have with our family and for our 20th anniversary.

A few kudos to the staff. A server named Paulina took such great care of us. She remembered our family’s name, our favorite drinks, etc. She would always see us and wave from afar. We just adored her! Really though, all the employees we experienced were really great outside of one grumpier older gentleman who was bartending a few evenings.

Thank you for not serving drinks with straws!!! I also appreciate the use of reusable cups, although your patrons left them all over the beach area (which we helped pick up on a daily basis). Not your fault- that just ignorant people.

Here is by biggest issue though… My biggest draw to this hotel was your emblems (hotel logo/marketing) of sea turtles. Not only are these the most beautiful creatures to my family, I was initially excited to see that their eggs were being protected by the hotel (and neighboring hotel) in a fenced in areas displaying an obvious conservation effort. However, after multiple days of walking the beach early in the morning and watching a literal brutal, bloody massacre of tiny turtle hatchlings trapped inside the enclosure by various species of shore birds… well, this was where I completely drew the line. I almost called the authorities to report this hotel as well as the one next door. It is great that you want to preserve sea turtle eggs in a “safe” place, but you can’t help these animals only half way. If you, as humans, are going to intervene… then please FULLY intervene. Maybe add some fencing on top or chicken wire to keep the predators out?? But… someone still needs to release them AT NIGHT! Watching swarms of birds pick at and eat the insides of the soft bellies of hundreds of these small baby turtles was horrific. It broke my heart and absolutely ruined my entire trip. I and my entire family was disgusted and disturbed by this. Shame on you all for letting this happen to these precious, protected animals.

We will obviously not return after our experience at this resort.

Disappointing, do not book

The staff is nice, but the resort is really disappointing compared to others we’ve booked. The food is not fresh, seasoned well, or cooked well. Every time we have to eat, I wish I could leave early. It’s old— nothing is new or nice. It mimics everything a nice resort would have (spa, etc) but it’s all so poorly done, I feel like we wasted our money coming. Do not recommend unless you cannot afford anything else. So many other resorts nearby are 5-10x nicer.

Excellent vacation spot

Sunscape is a beautiful, wonderful report. I came alone but there were many families and couples. There are so many things to do, and all the staff will make you feel warm and welcome

Great family vacation

We went to the Sunscape for my dad’s 75th birthday. I have to start by saying the staff was phenomenal; so kind, kept things clean, and helpful! We had a range of ages in our group (ages 7-75) but everyone enjoyed the resort. Lots of great options for food. Our favourite was having breakfast at Azul and eating tacos or the fresh cooked tortillas with beans and meat on top (huaraches). Lots of delicious fresh fruit. Also the taco stand in the afternoon was so good! Would have been nice to have a few more gluten free options at the Italian restaurant but otherwise our gluten-free member was happy. I liked the family-friendly party vibe the entertainment crew provided at the main pool, but some of the older adults in our group found it loud. The beach was beautiful (lots of seaweed but you climb over it). My kids loved seeing the turtle hatchet next door. One member of our family had a room on the beach with a cabana. The cabana was the best quiet sport to read and with the sound of the waves in the background you felt very relaxed.

The fresh coconuts are just ok so I would skip paying extra for one of those.
