Great location After reading reviews was expecting lots of partying and noise at night. that wasn't the case . The partying was during the day. The swim up bar was well used by many of the other holidays makers . Lots of these had too much sun and drinks , several had to be taken by wheelchairs by the lovely staff to their rooms. Entertainment was in my opinion very poor . Neon and white party were well attended. But apart from that it was a let down . Rooms were a little tired . Staff did clean every day . Fair value for money, like Butlins in the sun. Specialist dinning wasn't. Food no different from main dinning room. We were both unwell after eating at the pool side snack bar.

Mixed feelings
I found the Riu Tequila average my room was ok but had cockaroaches which was unpleasant the stairwell to the building of my room was in darkness most of the time and quite scary having to use the torch on my phone. I reported it and the light was on twice no one called back to ask if the problem was resolved. The staff were not that accommodating in the main dining and breakfast restaurant. Being people of colour we found that they seemed to be greeting and more attentive to the people of paler skin, as seasoned travellers we felt uncomfortable. We did not feel too fond of the little wildlife running around that became abit of nuisances whilst trying to eat around the outdoor area to the point that one of the wildlife raccoon actually climb and took a pack of crisps which we had just bought and ran off . We did not mind them running around they just became a nuisance around the pool areas. Not sure we would visit again to be honest .

Mexican Riu experience
We had a great time hear with my mother in may. It’s about 1 hour from Cancun Airport. The location is nice, there’s a little shopping mall in a few minutes walk, the downtown of Playa del Carmen is also a few minutes by taxi. The hotel’s own beach you can reach by golfcar or by foot. It’s a relatively big property but good organized. Our room was standard-equipped, quiet, from the balcony we could see the animals living there. Our bed was comfy, the bathroom as well. Cleaned every day, the minibar always refilled. We tried the pools also, but preferred the sea, palms and sand. There is also a buffet you can use to drink or have a snack. We found the main buffet reastaurant convenient, there was always free, clean tables, food was good, large, refined selection of dishes. There was always some programms in the evening. On thing I missed is the straw. I understand the environmental protecting efforts, but a paper one would be great for some coctails/drinks. And one negativ comment, we had airport transfer through Riu. They forgot ours back to the airport which was really annoying and unpleasant, especially that the staff at the reception was relly unhelpful and condescending. The only one was a lady from tui who tried to help and the concierge. After my complaint they paid me the cost of the taxi in 2 months. All in all it’s a good hotel for the money we paid.

Excellent hotel
We are just back from a fantastic week we all absolutely loved it.The food is amazing best we have ever had in an all inclusive we ate at the main restaurant ,the steak house and the Asian restaurant .The cocktails, wine,beer and spirits all good .The staff work so hard and are always happy the whe place is spotless,our room was cleaned everyday .The pools are great really warm and all the other geusts were really friendly .The shows on a night time are really good .The sports bar was our favourite lovely and cool inside open 24hrs for food and drink .The shop in the hotel is quite expensive but if you go.out the hotel and turn left there are some shops not far away .we went to the beach it was lovely plenty of loungers and literally a 5 minuite walk if that, just cross over the road and you will see the walkway we will definatley return to this hotel can not recommend it high enough.

This hotel allows racism
Unfortunately can not recommend this hotel after our stay was completely ruined, our son was repeatedly racially abused by another family, this was reported to the hotel manager who informed us there are no laws in Mexico regarding racism and told us there was nothing they could do, this was not just happening to our family the same boy was calling people the N word at the pool openly in front of other guest shouting for everyone to hear but the hotel still failed to act. Disgusted in the level of customer service provided! Riu does not take racist abuse of a minor serious at all!
