Peaceful rice-field estate with generous perks, despite minor housekeeping flaws
Located just outside central Ubud, Tanah Gajah is a breathtaking estate set amidst working rice fields, providing complete peace away from the town's traffic. Security carefully monitors the grounds, keeping visitors of the internal matcha place away from the private villa areas.
Our private pool villa was expansive, though housekeeping could have been more thorough regarding overall room cleanliness, and certain outdoor spaces along with pool gazebo cushions showed noticeable wear and staining. Despite these physical shortfalls, the service was exceptional. Staff members Sutari, Carlie, Pasek, and Edi provided warm, attentive, and highly responsive care via WhatsApp throughout our stay.
Dining was a highlight, particularly a Balinese fixed-menu dinner at the main restaurant where staff continually offered dish refills. We also watched the Ramayana dance fire show hosted right on the hotel grounds, which was beautiful.
All stays include generous perks such as daily afternoon tea, evening aperitifs, minibar access, and complimentary massages. Our private transfer driver was engaging, informative, and kindly dropped us off directly at our destination beyond the standard drop-off points.

Wonderful Experience
The grounds of Tanah Gajah are absolutely beautiful. Tranquil and set amongst rice paddies, you couldn’t want a better retreat from the hustle and bustle of Ubud town centre. The staff were amazing with special mention of Ayu, Dayu, Edi and Darma. Outside of the excellent service, breakfast was exceptional every day. Our villa was extremely comfortable and would highly recommend the resort. The only criticism would be the cost of dinner and beverages compared to other highly rated restaurants in Ubud. All in all, it was a wonderful experience staying at Tanah Gajah.

Our stay in paradise
We had a great time at Tanah Gajah Resort. Our stay in Villa 24 was amazing. The resort is located in a lush, beautiful area, surrounded by rice fields and palm trees. The concept keeps nature and culture perfectly balanced. It is a spacious resort, so you always feel comfortable and can enjoy the peaceful tranquility — like switching to "relax mode". Some details about the amenities: Daily fresh fruits, snacks, water, coffee, beer, etc. were included in our villa. There is an à la carte breakfast where you can ask for almost whatever you want, and all dishes are delicious. You can also pick any of the other meals prepared; Head Chef Dean and his team are doing an amazing job. They are also happy to fulfill special wishes. There is afternoon tea from 4 to 6 pm, where you can also get complimentary cold beverages. Snacks such as chicken fingers or spring rolls are available. Afterward, there is a cocktail hour from 6 to 7 pm. Everything is very tasty! We also received a 90-minute massage, which was very relaxing. We want to say: Thanks for making our stay so unforgettable! We were very sad to leave. A special "Thank You" goes out to:
- Pasek: Very attentive and polite, he takes care of every single detail to make your stay perfect!
- Ayu: The heart and soul of the restaurant. Always smiling, she takes her service very seriously and fulfills every wish in a very calm way.
- Carlie: Always in a good mood, he knows how to entertain the guests and is very communicative. He takes care of organizational matters, just like all the other team members.
- Hendra: We had a very informative rice field trekking tour with Hendra, who shared fascinating insights into Balinese life and culture.

Home away from home
When they call it a home away from home, this must be it. The staff of Tanah Gajah have been exceptional, going the extra mile to make us feel welcomed and comfortable throughout our stay. As we took time to speak to some of them, we found that many have been a part of the Tanah Gajah for years, a reflection of their love for the work they do. Some speak affectionately about their respect and gratitude to the hotel owner. Personally, I found this inspiring. Property wise, expect big spaces and beautiful landscape. Villas are well-positioned to ensure maximum privacy while their interiors lean toward the traditional Balinese style. We also used their gym and spa facilities, both of which overlook the paddy fields. Food at The Tempayan also never disappoints. Make sure to book the hotel’s free guided tour in the rice village nearby. When returning to the hotel from anywhere, you will be greeted with friendly faces, cold towels and “Welcome home!” Once again, a big thank you to Pasek, Ayu, Carlie, Darma, Edi, Indrai, Made, Sutari, Tony and all the other staff that we missed out!
